Occult Surfaces is a photographic investigation into what lies beneath and beyond the apparent. It builds on Giovanna’s ongoing interest in the poetic and political potential of abstraction, now expanded into the layered, textured urban environment of New York City.
This project departs from a visual language developed in the landscapes of Northeast Brazil, where Giovanna spent years working closely with stones, water, pigments, and movement: often alone, in silence, building images from solitude and material intimacy. Her photography there was not documentary, but observational in a radical sense: grounded in presence, time, and the will to see what resists visibility.
Now, in New York, she brings that same sensibility to the city, not to contrast nature with urban life, but to explore their continuities. Concrete replaces stone, metal replaces root, but the methodology remains: walk, observe, wait, receive, photograph. She works from proximity, often moving so close to her subjects that their function or identity dissolves, and what remains is surface, light, shadow, reflection: a residual aura of the thing itself.
Occult Surfaces is not about decoding the city, but about perceiving it differently. It is an attempt to displace the habitual logic of what should be seen, and how. What are the textures, colors, and visual rhythms that carry the hidden pulse of a place? What does the city conceal in its walls, its storefronts, its sidewalks? What has been erased, overwritten, or made too ordinary to be noticed? Giovanna approaches these questions through abstraction, not as an aesthetic choice, but as a strategy of resistance, to fixed meanings, fast images, and flattened realities.

Veroli/Rome, Italy. A Collective Exhibition (Museum Circuit + Artists Residence) + New York Art Exhibition at Saphira & Ventura Gallery – Supported by New York International Contemporary Art Society.
The Monastery of Sant’ Erasmo and the Rocca di Leuscio is the most suitable place for artists to bring and give life to their creations. In this peaceful historical building, the artist will have a dedicated space for works created during their stay/conference together with trekking, wellness activities, gastronomy, and the attractions such as the abbeys, natural landscapes, and medieval villages.
A 6th century Benedictine monastery was finely restored into a hotel. The monks’ cells become rooms and the former refectory, a restaurant. Place where the past of ancient stones dialogues with modern time. Inside you can feel an atmosphere of exclusivity and privacy and every breath is a breath of history mixed with the art and culture of a medieval village.
The “first gallery immersive art experience at a museum in the Monastery in Italy”. Saphira & Ventura Gallery, specializing in art, design, and technology in collaboration with the New York International Contemporary Art Society and Maco Museum offers artists and travelers from all over the world a unique space where they can stay overnight for 10 days and explore and enjoy the charm of Veroli, a medieval village in Italy.
An extraordinary experience that Saphira & Ventura, with its 18 years of experience, has mounted various exhibitions with international artists on board in the US, Europe, Asia, and South America. Having every year refined their innovative experiences with art, design, architecture, and technology in both Venice and Veroli.
