The AMAZÔNIA BIENAL 2025 is an international event fostering collaboration among various national and international stakeholders, including artists, collectors, galleries, scientists, universities, corporations, civil society, indigenous groups, NGOs, and government representatives to promote economic sustainability in the Amazon while harmonizing economic and ecological interests.
Belém, Pará, BR
Through art, the BIENAL seeks to underline the significance of the Amazon for Brazil and the global community, particularly its role in climate stabilization and future planetary health. Given the heightened global focus on the Amazon, this event is timely due to recent political and economic discussions like the G7 Summit and the Mercosur-EU Agreement. The core context is the sustainable, non-exploitative utilization of Brazil’s natural resources, chiefly the Amazon rainforest, which is crucial for climate mitigation, water cycle maintenance across the South American continent, and Brazil’s agriculture, economy, and population well-being.
The alarming deforestation rate pushes the Amazon towards a critical point beyond which its transformation into a savannah could have irreversible global impacts. Yet, sustainable development models leverage the forest’s environmental services and renewable resources for economic benefit.
Examples include Bioindustrial models inspired by biomimetics and sustainable agriculture like agroforestry systems and extractivism, which have already demonstrated substantial economic returns while preserving the region’s ecology.
The BIENAL aims to highlight sustainable development opportunities in the Amazon and raise awareness about the dire consequences of continued deforestation, fostering a rich, multidisciplinary dialogue towards a prosperous and sustainable Amazon.
