CONTEMPORARY CONCEPT

Collective Exhibition

On view: May 25–30, 2022
4 W 43rd St. #416, New York, NY 10036

Both evoking and engaging, the midtown exhibition Contemporary Concept shines light on a collection of works by six contemporary artists under the theme of conceptual art that has dominated a great part of our community.

Whether in Miami or Hong Kong, we find conceptual pieces to be the cornerstone of the contemporary art scene. Exploring this approach, curator Alcinda Saphira provides guests at Saphira & Ventura Gallery, with the opportunity to interact and communicate on the diverse pieces that make up the exhibition.

Including concepts in works of art has been a tradition dating back centuries, when artists would use their medium to present elements of transcendence, philosophy, and spirituality. The works transporting a particular concept for the viewer to medidate on. This exhibition will feature such works and one example is that of Katy Le Blanc, an artist whose dedication to environemental activism has been accentuated in her mixed-media works showcasing the detriment human activity has created in modern times to our ecosystem. The artist has had a long career spanning both western and eastern traditions, encompassing various symbols in her works.

The works of Guil Calil, on the other hand, show the artist’s dedication to lyrical abstract beauty in terms of texture, his The Drams and Human Harshness series has had its exposure in vastly different regions ranging from the Emirates to Brazil. While Regula Bill, a figurative artist, creates her works with no conscious design plan, therefore establishing a work of art open to complete interpretation of the viewer. The artist draws her inspiration from figures, landscapes, and other representations which make their way into unique forms under the artist’s natural flow of execution.

Gerrit Oppelland-Hampel, an artist fascinated by the sensuality of color finds value within the work itself and has worked on a variety of paintings, both in her studio in Spain and Germany, emphasizing a playful juxtapositions and dialogue between shades. Lonell Nellessen, an artist inspired by the old masters, seeks to continue bringing beauty into the lives of others. Working in a single medium, Nellessen captures the grace of animals and landscapes and elevate them to conceptual symbols of beauty. Adelia Clavien, a multimedia artist will having have her iconic women series displayed as highlighting the inspiring concept the figures evoke.

Humberto Hermeto | May 14–21 2022

HUMBERTO HERMETO

Solo Exhibition

On view: May 14 – 21 2022
4 W 43rd St. #416, New York, NY 10036

Visual art that never ceases to puzzle and surprise its multitude of spectators, this approach has been the case with multi-disciplinary artist, Humberto Hermeto, whose career in art, design, and architecture has won him several great acclaims. The artist has been in the gallery’s collection since 2019 and for the first time, residents and visitors of New York will be able to attend his solo exhibition.

Held at Saphira & Ventura Gallery, curator Alcinda Saphira accentuates the diverse elements of Humberto’s work, highlighting his work with acrylic on canvas but also with unconventional methods such as nails.

The particular approach that lies behind Hermeto’s style would be his dedication to precision, whether in creating two dimensional works of art, mixed-media works or the blueprints of a residential building, Hermeto’s delicate crafting of lines and perspective create a gentle flow by which the viewer can see the works in boundless forms. His work with nails include figures such as Ingrid Bergman, Audrey Hepburn, and Salvador Dali. Mixing different mediums on his abstract paintings, Hermeto, distinguishes what is modern and what is contemporary by his characteristic use of words and statements in his paintings as well as the application of various mediums such as gold leaf. His purely abstract works have also been appreciated for their union as an abstract installation, each piece being an integral part of a whole.

Likewise is the case with his architectural works, residential homes encompassing the beauty of the local surroundings, such as his projects in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The use of empty space, linear and nonlinear articulate themselves in a postmodern aesthetic, engaging the viewer with different perspectives and lines. Hermeto has dedicated himself also to the market of non-fungible tokens, (NFT) and since 2019, exhibited his different works in Paris, New York, and Miami.
