Ideology Unfastened | Jan 17–26, 2024

IDEOLOGY UNFASTENED

Collective Exhibition Exhibition

Jan 17 – 26, 2024

While the artist’s visions are manifested in the physical world, their journey to interpret such ideas on the canvas have relied on the releasing of their intuitions bounded in their creative spirit. The contemporary exhibition, Ideology Unfastened, by Saphira Ventura together with the support of the New York International Contemporary Art Society, showcases nine contemporary artists, each exploring different themes on their respective mediums. The exhibition is curated by Alcinda Saphira.

Opening the new year with a carefully selected group of contemporary artists, Saphira & Ventura will feature artists from its international collection following the theme of release, boundless energy, and the volition to make manifest their ideologies in the visual world. Among them Maria Angelica Viso, known for precise geometric structures, the pieces capture the influences of the op-art school and masters such as Jesus Rafael Soto and Carlos Cruz Diez, in its tender harmony of lines and curves.

The case is similar with Alice Vilhena, whose delicate features of the human body intermingle with bichromatic shapes in a stunning approach to surrealism. Gui Calil, an abstract painter, synthesizes his resin in acrylic, capturing the versatility of abstraction not only in tone but in technique. A similar approach is done by Soonik Kwon, an iconic Korean artist, interpreting colors of his nation both with an intricate use of  graphite in a panoramic expression on the canvas. Throughout his career, Kwon has exhibited in Korea’s most prestigious fairs as well as exhibitions in Europe and North America.

The case of playful technique can be attributed to Maria Ason as well and her picturesque yet unorthodox floral art. Experimenting with colors and mediums, the artist utilizes the scanography technique and acrylic, bringing to life works with a puzzling yet striking nature. Colleen Martin creates works in the abstract tradition, her Rhythmic Color series, for example, captures yellows and reds in a lush and elegant manner. The artist cites yoga as one of her dominant influences.

Roberto Arraiz, another artist but focusing on optical art but via the painting medium where he highlights the divine qualities of circles, a symbol evoking infinity. Brooklyn-based artist, Tony Leonardo Cimino, on the other hand, introduces figures to his viewers, capturing a variety of shapes, figures, and his perspective on them while photography and digital-artist Abby Perillo explores different themes and techniques via her photographic skills and talent. The exhibition’s nine artists highlight different ideologies, themes, and perceptions, yet all merge in the confluence to unleash and unfasten their creative potential.

Rebecca Stenn | Nov 9–20, 2023

FACE | Rebecca Stenn

Solo Exhibition

Nov 9–20, 2023

In New York’s great history as an art capital, an appreciation for both the figurative and abstract tradition, has gradually cultivated itself as the twin pillars which exemplify the strength of New York. Both influence multi-dimensional artist, Rebecca Stenn whose solo exhibition, Face, is the theme of the upcoming exhibition by Saphira & Ventura Gallery.

Curated by Alcinda Saphira.

While initiating her career as a dancer and choreographer, Rebecca Stenn has lent her grace from the movement of music to the movement of the brush. Inspired by the strokes and textures of rich abstraction paintings, the artist intrinsically links her decades of dance performance to the importance of space and proximity in her pieces. In her new series, Face, the pieces explore what happens when she excludes features, allowing lines, colors and spaces to fill them in for the viewer. In essence, the viewer lays their own story onto the abstract face in front of them. While a variety of techniques are applied to her other works, Stenn also guides her brush to the creation of portraits and faces in other series.

Exploring the passions, sentiments and sensations of a face, the exhibition includes a few pieces which dive into the architectural faces of hills, mountains and rivers. In the description of her process, the artist remarks “I want to paint a face that tells a story, that holds a question, that is lost in thought or reverie.” The exhibition will feature other works in addition to the Face series culminating in her panoramic experience. Stenn’s career too has been wide and innovative, with previous exhibitions being held in cities abounding the globe such as Venice and Milan in Italy, London, Lisbon together with New York and Miami.

In their journey to interpret their vision on the canvas, artists have relied on a profound intuition gradually developing itself in various stages. This leads to a variety of ideas, emotions, and sketches that forms the core synthesis of their thoughts. In its newest exhibition, Intuitive Dialogues, global gallery Saphira Ventura together with the New York International Contemporary Art Society, explore the effects of such dialogues as they manifest themselves on the canvas.

The upcoming exhibition will feature an assemblage of artists both national and international that make part of the gallery’s versatile approach to its exhibition. From Austria, figurative artist, Elke Schmolzer, enriches her canvas with the anthromorphization of stones, a native element in her local community while photographer Maria Alejandra Ibáñez captures her local rocks via the snap of the camera, together with the various flora and fauna that inhabit the regions of Peru. Regarding the art of painting, a strong saturation and playful form characterizes the work of New York-based artist José Auquilla, as he captures the natural brilliancy of his colors, splashing them gracefully on the canvas. Another New York-based painter, Joanne Handler, creates her subjects with a medley of media, presenting techniques ranging from figurative to abstract expressionism. Moving into three dimensional works, the angular sculptures of artist, Gisseline Amiuny de Ottati blends in the elements of neo-kinetic and op-art in a contemporary framework. Intuitive Dialogues will also feature Rita BasuMallick, another New York-based painter, known for her landscape oil pieces showing gentle details in both a modern and contemporary style.
