Collective Exhibition
Aug 3–8, 2022

“The purpose of art” says Picasso, “is to wash the dusts of everyday life.” In the great variety of art we come across in our digital age, we still wash the dusts of our daily life with powerful works. In its upcoming collective exhibition, Saphira & Ventura displays seven contemporary artists encompassing both abstract and figurative traditions. The exhibition, curated by Alcinda Saphira, will be open for viewing on August 03, 2022 at Saphira & Ventura Gallery, on 4 W 43rd St. #416 from 6pm to 8pm and will be available until August 08, 2022.

The exhibition will host several artists from different parts of the world and with a versatile background. Of such artists that currently has an online exhibition available is Andrea Brêtas, a digital artist and photographer continuously testing new mediums and subjects, both in the figurative tradition with models as well as abstractions. This is a theme picked up by New York based artist, Vikash Jha, whose abstract works highlight the use of unconventional textures as well as an appreciation for stark lighting contrast. The gallery will also exhibit works by Huang Xiang, the iconic Chinese calligrapher whose works made a great impact in the Chinese art scene of the late 20th century. Xiang’s work blends poetry and abstraction, illustrating a dynamic blend of provocative themes fused with a growing emergence of Chinese art. This somewhat parallels the works of another artist, Regular Magrit-Bill, an abstract artist yet whose works on paper and board, have an almost surreal and minimalistic element to them. While her canvas works focus on the powerful relationship between complimentary colors, such as blue and yellow.  Rita BasuMallick, likewise based in New York, will have her works featured in this exhibition. The artist’s inspirations of impressionism and old masters can be seen in her canvas paintings. Rachael Brown likewise has an inspiration, however, in her works, using acrylic instead of oil, the artist focuses on scenic landscapes and floral patterns. Returning to abstraction, the paintings of Quebec-based artist, Aro, touch on abstract representations featuring  spirals which juxtapose a plethora of colors on a solid plane, creating an elegant ambiance for the spectator.

Rosanne Potter | Jul 23 – Aug 23

rosanne potter

Virtual Solo Exhibition
July 23 – August 23, 2022

Rosanne Potter paints in the Abstract Expressionist tradition, but her paintings vary greatly in style and palette. Never attempting a predictable style or look, each painting arises from the meeting of material, usually just paint (but sometimes sand, wax, or other collage materials) and canvas. The colors are chosen, but the structure of each work develops on its own.

Some characteristic moves can be noted: looping circular strokes, metallic surface flares, horizontal color fields displayed and interplayed. Though they reappear, these features are not present in all works or even all present in any one work. Each of her major paintings develops intrinsically without reference to anything done earlier. She has no interest in repetitively creating work that can be identified as hers from across the room.

The poet Yeats is reported to have said that he was always surprised by the poems that came from him. Potter, too, allows herself to be surprised by her work, for although she does not start with the intention to depict a body, a face, or any other object, readable images seem to emerge from the paint in ways that are mysterious to her. Sometimes the shapes that emerge have mythical significance: skulls, mirrors, birds, animals, buildings, planetary systems. These are not images she has in mind and brings to the canvas; they are paint that forms itself into shapes that she can “read” and afterwards elaborate consciously if she chooses. Sometimes she incorporates her readings into a title; usually she leaves titles open, so that viewers can find what they wish to read in the imagery of the
painting.

Potter began drawing informally as a young woman, by copying Picasso’s Woman Ironing. She took a studio art class with American Abstractionist Clarence Giese during her Institute of European Studies Junior Year Abroad in Vienna. Her professional career though followed from her MA at the University of Chicago and Ph.D. at the University of Texas in English Literature. At Iowa State University, where she spent her teaching career, she taught everything from Freshman English through graduate seminars on Virginia Woolf, Modern Drama and Women’s Studies. She only turned back to painting after early retirement to Key West where she took a painting workshop with Joachim Loeber, known then as “the last living German Expressionist” who coincidentally immigrated to and worked in Potter’s hometown, Westfield, NJ, and in her retirement home, Key West. Loeber taught technique rather than style: how different colors, paints, surface, and tools effect each other. An early product of his workshop was Key West, Transit of Venus, Poems and Paintings by Rosanne Potter (SeaStory Press, 2005).

Paolo Terdich Solo | Jul 13 –20 2022

paolo terdich | aqua

July 13–20 2022
Saphira & Ventura Gallery
4 W 43rd St. #416 New York, NY 10036

Purification, rebirth, and transformation, are themes in the works of Paolo Terdich, an acclaimed figurative painter based in Piacenza, Italy. Saphira & Ventura is proud to launch this exhibition, curated by Alcinda Saphira, exploring the aquatic series of the artist and the transcendent themes they touch on.

“Underwater swimmers witness their dissolution” says Terdich, “their consciousness breaks and disintegrates.” In this upcoming exhibition,  Saphira & Ventura Gallery shines a light on the Acqua series by Paolo Terdich, a dedicated artist working on Surreal Realism which capture the essence of many of his works. The Acqua series reflect a fascination with the purification and transformation of the human consciousness. Effaced and dissolved, the subjects in Terdich’s oil on canvas paintings, find themselves immersed in oblivious waters, their movements within the water provide us with the masterful technique that the artist uses in his creation. Acqua 05 shows the sunlight gently shining on the water while the subject peacefully floats above the surface, while Acqua 41 has the subject descended and dissolved underwater. Curator, Alcinda Saphira, also incorporates the works of Terdich in a state of art digital format, giving the exhibition a phygital format, allowing guests to transport themselves in the world of the aquatic figures. Terdich’s works were exhibited worldwide and have been acquired by numerous private collectors, galleries, art institutions. His works won numerous international prizes and has been reviewed and published in various art magazines and books. He also co-founded the artist group “Eoykos”, composed by six Italian artists of figurative expression. This Movement was created to eventually demonstrate, in equilibrium between Surrealism and Metaphysics, that figurative art is still a privileged mean of communication, aimed at transmitting human emotions.

NEOCON – CHICAGO | Jun 13–15 2022

NEOCON | NTFs For Interior Design

June 13–15, 2022

Saphira & Ventura Present a Look at the Future of Art in Public Spaces as Part of Interior and Sources Curated Space at NeoCon.

Saphira & Ventura is recognized as a source and leading authority on the interface between design and digital manifestations of art. The NFT lounge in the Interior and Sources 3,000 square foot showroom at NeoCon is certain to be a highlight for attendees. Thousands of architects and interior designers will descend on the three-day event in Chicago from June 13 – 15.

“We are focused on the strengths and opportunities for change that NFTs (nonfungible tokens) represent,” says Alcinda Saphira, president of the forward-thinking metaverse company and its bricks and mortar art gallery, located in midtown Manhattan. “This is truly one of the most exciting times in the history of art. We are very happy to work with I&S.”

Louis Ventura, the company’s CEO adds, “This is the biggest transformation in visual storytelling since the first cave paintings, or since pigments were mixed oils. Art may be the last element selected when designing public spaces. But, often, it’s the takeaway. It’s what people remember when they get home.”

The curator of Trend Futures, the I&S showroom at NeoCon, Stacy Garcia chose Saphira and Ventura to anchor the NFT lounge. A conversation with the two principals of the namesake company makes it clear why they are the go-to choice to help architects and designers realize the immense and inevitable change and potential that NFTs represent.

SquareMotionArt by Vieter

Most current attention is focused on NFTs as part of the blockchain casino that began with Bitcoin and other virtual monetary tokens. NFT movements like Bored Ape Yacht Club or CryptoPunks are driven by youthful enthusiasm more than aesthetics. Cartoon-y vignettes may have opened a virtual door to 19-year-olds who fancy themselves as artists; but the creations are suitable as gifs and memes or to hang on the walls of virtual houses in the metaverse. They have little, if anything, to do with fine art.

“The real potential of NFTs for art is only beginning to be explored,” says Louis Ventura. “Nonfungible tokens are coded digits stored on the blockchain. Basically, that means they cannot be changed. Artworks can be tracked and traced and forgery – such as we see with a lot of high-end contemporary two-dimensional paintings – is being eliminated. However, what can and will change is the way in which NFT artworks are presented. Immersive art experiences and holographic displays are part of this trend. We may wonder what Van Gogh would have thought about crowds of people being able to walk through his art. But the real question is what are the possibilities when truly talented fine artists are also digital natives? That’s what Saphira & Ventura is dedicated to exploring with our amazing roster of contemporary artists.”

Alcinda Saphira adds, “We are where technology meets beauty in public and commercial spaces. That’s what we will help designers to understand when they visit us in the NFT lounge in the I&S showroom. We recognize our responsibility to present NeoCon attendees with art and opportunities to lead the way in this exciting present and into an amazing future.”
