Blooming Transitions | Jun 14–20, 2023

BLOOMING TRANSITIONS

Collective Exhibition

On View: Jun 14–20, 2023

Working with the theme of transitions has been an iconic approach for artists since time immemorial, in a glancing at the power of this theme, international gallery, Saphira and Ventura will be hosting Blooming Transitions, an exhibition focusing on the strength of this subject with a collective exhibition curated by Alcinda Saphira.

In its inclusion of artists from around the globe, Blooming Transitions exhibition sheds light on contemporary artists making their statements and elevating an aesthetic which concentrates on the timeless theme of transitions whether this be through technique, context or statement. Guests at the gallery can see the provocative yet engaging works of Katy Le Blanc, an artist experimenting with an assemblage of mediums while also focusing on the concerning phenomenon of anthropogenic climate change, among others who work with various mediums such as New York-based artist, Vikash Jha, whose lush abstract paintings capture the sparks of light together with displaying a smooth and radiant play of colors. But while Jha transitions with mediums, Quebec artist, Aro, focuses on a transition of delicate strokes, creating splendid circles and loose lines with design-like flair. From Rio de Janeiro, Maria Page emphasizes bold colors in her works, transitioning the palette from one primary color to another one, synthesizing the whole space of the canvas as it is into one moving piece. This theme of motion and its transitional qualities is also incorporated in the work of Hijo Nam, an artist focusing on nature, time, motion, and a series of other themes which she explores with her variety of materials. While Gerrit Oppelland-Hampel’s picturesque series of 12×12 abstract works emphasize a touch of clarity but also nostalgia with its soft colors, balancing form and tone wit their transitional nature.

Elevating this to new heights with Chronicles of the Soul, the debut solo exhibition of surrealist artist, Tony Rodríguez, whose remarkable career in Cuba and Miami has earned hima reputable position in both places. The exhibition, featuring a collection curated by Alcinda Saphira, will include the artist’s newer pieces. Works will also be available on the gallery’s Artsy page.

In these works, we see motifs of the artist’s inspiration from the ancient philosophies, together with poems, and modern universal elements. The viewer is struck by his enormous towers, panoramic landscape, and impressive machinery, which cite liberty and unites history and human experience.

“In the process of this exploration, I have discovered that persistence and dedication are the basic elements of art.” says Rodríguez, who was born and raised in Santiago de Cuba and for many years has worked as an art professor. Although his base is in Miami, his experience has been extensive, with nations such as Germany, France, Denmark, and Italy exhibiting his works in the past fifteen years. Joanne Handler | May 10 – 16, 2023

IN MY LIFE | JOANNE HANDLER

Solo Exhibition
On View: May 10 – 16, 2023

Defining and innovating new methods of application, New York artist, Joanne Handler, elevates her pieces in rich textured layers. Honoring her long-standing career, Saphira & Ventura Gallery has introduced her work to serene Venice during its renowned biennale, and will pay homage in an upcoming solo exhibition, In My Life, curated by Alcinda Saphira.

An artist of many marvels, Joanne Handler’s past includes years practicing fine art photography in New York as well as an exploration into abstract painting where compelling narratives surface amid the multidimensional character of her work. Her paintings go beyond self-examination to respond to current events within the framework of both global and personal history while exploring such themes as memory,  perspective, self-determination, community and motherhood. Her layered and textured mixed media paintings subtly address notions of inner conflict, building on a series of oppositions and the blurred lines that exist between them- light vs. dark, hope vs. despair. The Morning After, for example, is splashed with pumice, enamel, and acrylic together with photographic transfers creating a picturesque scenery of figures emerging from the dark textural sea.

Self-reflection being the driving force behind Handler’s newest work, her most recent series uses the unbridled freedom of abstract expressionism to lay her ground, providing her with the perfect starting point. She then incorporates figuration and photo transfers culled from her many years as a photographer, occasionally adding small objects, either found or of personal importance. By integrating these elements into her latest paintings she brings together her past and her present in the context of an uncertain future.  Such are the characteristics in Handler’s works, which in its attention to form and figure, unites that iconic New York abstraction inspired by Roth and Pollock with a contemporaneous approach to the figurative tradition. Indeed, Handler’s work has been exhibited during the 2022 Venice Biennale as part of Saphira & Ventura gallery’s Side By Side series. The artist has also been featured in the Coral Springs Museum’s Daydreaming exhibition as well as a number of New York exhibitions where her works have been acquired in private collections. Today, Handler still focuses on exploring different methods, linking the abstract tradition with her own interpretations of the figurative form.

Saphira & Ventura is a global talent management network focused on art, design and architecture as well as alternative forms of expression such as NFTs, its mission is to promote and exhibit cutting edge artists, designers and architects in a contemporary and alternative setting.

Her Stone Faces exhibition in 2022 being a widely acclaimed event. Also from Austria is artist, Martina Hartusch, devoted mostly to the abstract school, she cites surrealism but also Gerhard Richter as an influence on her work. This will be her debut exhibition in New York. Pluralities in Pictures will also feature the photographs of Elisabeth Wortsman, works whose almost kinetic-like quality and sharp colors enchant the eyes. Behruz Bahadoori | Mar 31 – Apr 10 2023

Behruz Bahadoori | Solo Exhibition

Nature has rid itself of man in the profound landscapes of Bahadoori, an Austrian painter whose refined masterpieces on bridges together the untenable beauty of nature and the artist’s desire to manifest it. In this upcoming collaboration between Saphira & Ventura and Gallery Steiner, guests will be presented with several of the artist’s works, curated by Alcinda Saphira and Corinne Steiner.

Growing up by the rich Caspian sea, Behruz Bahadoori eventually got his studies done in Tehran before leaving his country during the pivotal year of 1979 to go to Vienna, to continue his studies. After several years, he began assisting the famous artist Gottfried Helnwein, learning different techniques in his atelier in Germany.

Later on, Bahadoori began his artistic work as an independent artist, developing his own technique on aquarelle colours, oil and acrylic. He has shown his works in the Austrian Cultural Centre at the Palace Pálffy and is currently showing with the Gallery Steiner. At first sight, one might be tempted to quickly classify Behruz Bahadoori’s work as neo-Impressionistic and yet his paintings are places of catharsis. His depersonified use of allegory and symbolism do not appear as the result of an extensive search, but rather, as innocent discoveries. As one strolls through Bahadoori’s pictures, one notices that he depicts a biologically-oriented gentleness, as nature suggests. Among other practices, Bahadoori also realizes portrait paintings as ordered works in which his signature style of bleding reality with illusion is incorporated.
